A prop firm provides you with funded capital to trade. You pass an evaluation to get a funded account and split the profits. Rules-based funding — your capital is not at risk.
Mainly 1-step, 2-step and instant funding. 2-step is the most common (profit target first, then risk target). 1-step is simpler. Instant funding skips evaluation but usually offers lower splits and stricter rules.
Two common types: static drawdown (balance may not fall below a fixed % of the initial capital) and trailing drawdown (tracked from the highest balance). Many firms also add a daily loss limit. Always read the rules first.
Check four things: track record and payout history, transparency of split and refund policies, payout speed and methods, and industry risk ratings or negative news (closures, refused payouts).
It varies a lot: futures firms usually $200–$400 (with promos), forex firms $400–$900. Price is not the only factor — drawdowns, splits and payout speed matter more.
Yes, many traders run multiple accounts to diversify risk. But some firms ban cross-account hedging and copy trading — conflicting rules can get you flagged, so check each contract.
